Public Transit
Metro & Tram
The M3 (Blue) metro line connects Nyugati directly to the city center. The 4 and 6 Trams stop in front, running 24/7 along the Grand Boulevard.
Free travel for passengers aged 65+ is restricted to EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens. Others must purchase tickets.
Accessibility & Safety
Accessibility
Assistance for disabled passengers is available at all major MÁV stations, but must be requested at least 24 hours in advance via the official website or call center (+36 1 3 49 49 49).
- Keleti: The main hall is level; modern elevators provide access to the international underpass and metro lines.
- Nyugati: Features modern lifts to the M3 metro and street level following recent renovations.
- Déli: Elevators connect the upper train platforms to the lower street and M2 metro levels.
The M4 (Green) metro line (accessible from Keleti) is the most modern and fully barrier-free line in the city. Avoid the M2 line if you struggle with steep escalators, as several older stations lack elevators.
Safety
Budapest is generally safe, but be vigilant against these common transit scams:
- The ‘Official’ Imposter (Taxi Hyenas): Ignore individuals inside the arrival halls holding “Taxi” signs. These are unlicensed drivers who significantly overcharge. Head to official kiosks (Főtaxi) or use app-based rideshares.
- The ‘Money Police’ Scam: Be wary of plain-clothes individuals posing as “currency police” asking to inspect your wallet. Real police are always in uniform and will never handle your cash on the street.
Essential Services
Lost & Found
For items lost at stations or on trains, visit the local customer service desk:
- Keleti: Visit the Utascentrum (Customer Center) in the underpass level.
- Nyugati: Office located near platform 13.
- Déli: Visit the main Ticket Office area.
First Aid & Pharmacies
- Pharmacy: Teréz Patika (Teréz krt. 41) is a 24/7 pharmacy located 2 minutes walk from the station. Another pharmacy is inside the adjacent WestEnd Mall.
- First Aid: Contact staff at the Customer Service Office (near platform 13).
In the event of a serious medical emergency at any hub, dial 112 for an ambulance.
Arrival
Official Taxi
Official Budapest taxis are bright yellow with yellow license plates. They use fixed rates: a base fare of 1,100 HUF plus 440 HUF per km.
Official ranks are located outside each station. Always ensure the meter is running.
- Keleti: Baross tér exit.
- Nyugati: Near the WestEnd Mall entrance.
- Déli: Street level exit.
Ignore drivers offering rides inside the terminal or station halls. These are unlicensed “hyenas” who often overcharge.
Rideshare
Bolt and Uber: Exit toward the Westend Mall side (Váci út). Use the 'Kiss & Ride' loop in front of the mall entrance.
ATMs and Currency
Avoid blue/yellow Euronet ATMs. Use bank-affiliated ATMs like OTP, UniCredit, Raiffeisen, or Erste Bank. Always select “Decline Conversion” to let your home bank handle the rate.
Best ATMs at Hubs
- BUD: OTP Bank ATMs are located in both terminals.
- Keleti: OTP Bank branch/ATM in the underpass.
- Nyugati: Erste Bank or OTP ATMs near the main entrance.
Departure
Arrival & Check-In
For international and domestic trains, arrive 30–45 minutes before your scheduled departure. There is no formal check-in or boarding procedure; you may proceed directly to your platform once it is announced.
Platform numbers are often finalized only 10–15 minutes before departure. Always monitor the large digital “Indulás” (Departures) boards rather than relying solely on printed schedules.
Security Controls
Security & Screening
There are no security checkpoints or luggage x-ray screenings for trains departing from Budapest hubs. You are free to carry liquids and personal items onto the train without restriction.
VAT Refunds
VAT refund services are not available at Budapest train stations. Refunds must be processed at the final EU exit point (typically the airport or a border crossing).
