Train Strikes

Rodalies commuter trains, including the R2 Nord from the airport, are frequently disrupted by strikes and technical faults. Check the Renfe Rodalies Barcelona page before you travel. Metro L3/L5 or an Official Taxi are reliable fallbacks.

Children’s Fares

Under 4 travel free on all TMB metro/bus routes and on the Aerobús - no ticket needed.

Ages 4 and over pay the full adult fare on TMB metro/bus and on the Aerobús. The T-16 resident card is for Catalan residents only and is not available to tourists.

Public Transit

Metro & Tram

The Metro is the fastest way to reach central hubs like Plaça de Catalunya (10–15 mins). A single ticket is €2.90, but the T-casual is recommended.

Buying Tickets
  1. Follow “M” signs to the red TMB ticket machines.
  2. Select the English flag icon.
  3. Choose your card (e.g., T-casual Zone 1). Note: The machine will issue a cardboard T-mobilitat card (one-time €0.50 fee).
  4. Validation: Tap your card against the white sensor on the turnstile.

City Bus

The bus terminal is at the Plaça dels Països Catalans exit. You can pay for single journeys using contactless credit/debit cards on the bus.

Boarding & Navigation

Within Sants, the walk to the L3 (Green) line is significantly longer than the L5 (Blue); use L5 if possible. Always board buses through the front door and validate immediately.

Accessibility

Barcelona Sants is fully accessible with lifts to all platforms. Adif Acerca staff (orange vests) provide boarding assistance. Request assistance at least 48 hours in advance via the Adif Acerca website.

Safety

Watch out for pickpockets when checking boards or using ticket machines. Be cautious of unsolicited “help” at ticket machines.

Official Taxi

Official Taxi colors are black and yellow. Follow Taxi signs to the rank at Plaça dels Països Catalans. There is a €2.55 station pickup surcharge.

Taxi Surcharge Sticker

Taxi drivers must display a list of official surcharges (station pickup, luggage, night hours) on a sticker on the rear passenger window. If the price seems incorrect, ask for a printed receipt (“Recibo”).

Rideshare

Pickup point (Barcelona Sants)

Cabify, Freenow, and Uber: Follow signs for Exit C (Carrer de Tarragona). Walk across the square to the second pavement.

The Blue Plate Rule

Licensed rideshare vehicles (VTC) in Spain must display a blue license plate at the rear. Always verify this matches your app for safety.

ATMs and Currency

The currency is the Euro (€). ATMs (CaixaBank, Santander) are plentiful in both the Airport Arrivals hall and the Sants Station lobby.

Dynamic Currency Conversion

Always choose “Decline Conversion” at ATMs and pay in Euros. Letting the ATM do the conversion to your home currency (USD/CAD/GBP) can cost an extra 5-10% in hidden fees.

For high-speed trains (AVE, OUIGO, Iryo), arrive at least 45 minutes before departure to clear security. For local regional trains (Rodalies), 15 minutes is sufficient.

Security & Screening

High-speed departures (Platforms 1–6) require a mandatory luggage X-ray screening before entering the boarding lounge. You do not need to remove liquids or electronics.

Boarding Closures & Mobility

High-speed platform numbers are often announced only 20 minutes before departure; boarding closes strictly 2 minutes before the train leaves. At the airport, staff are accommodating to passengers with limited mobility in security lanes.
